In Sidama country, coffee was part of the land long before people inhabited it. It is in a part of memory where time cannot be counted, it has always been there. When we decided to sell and export it, we were told it could not be called kafa, coffee, and that each village should give it its name. We did not do it at first and whoever bought it from us decided to call it Abisinia, which is part of our memory and our time. Others believed that it should be a name from the past, more modern than kafa, it should be called Aksun, which is part of our memory and time but farther away. We argued and argued until Tilahun, the great wise woman, decided: Abyssinia is the name of my cat and will be the name of our coffee.
