On January 26, 2026, the facilities of Giesen Roasting Solutionsbecame the venue for the Pre Open The Netherlands. From early on, the atmosphere already hinted that it was not going to be just any day. Expectation, concentration and a great desire to put themselves to the test.

Participants encountered a tasting table designed to arouse curiosity and demand maximum attention. Coffees from Colombia, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Brazil offered a wide Range of Profiles – from sweet and balanced cups to complex and vibrant proposals – that put sensory memory and analytical skills to the test. With each phase, the challenge increased, transforming the tasting into an intense, challenging and deeply formative experience.

The challenge that aroused curiosity: sensory memory

If there was one test that marked the day, it was undoubtedly the sensory memory test. For many participants, it was an unusual exercise, which generated surprise, nerves and, above all, enormous interest.

Seeing how each person approached the challenge, looking for references, aromas and memories, turned this moment into one of the most talked about of the event. The concentration was absolute and the enthusiasm was contagious.

A winner with precision

After an intense day of testing, the name that stood out above the rest was Hidde Smeets from Rotterdam. With a combination of speed, safety and great sensory ability, he achieved a final score of 9 points and a total time of 08:17, making him the winner of the Pre Open The Netherlands 2026.
