Thunguri Washed station is located in the Nyeri Coffee region, specifically in the Mukurweini Coffee district.
This Washed station was built in the year 1999, it receives coffee cherries from more than 425 Producers in the area who grow their cherries in volcanic lands at more than 1,700 masl. Thunguri is part of the Rumukia Cooperative, which consists of 8 Washed stations, Thunguri being one of the most important.
Kanye Mbote is the Manager of the Rumukia Cooperative and the Thunguri Washed station, he has Joyce Mwangi on his team, she has been involved in Coffee for 27 years and is the CEO of the Rumukia Cooperative.
The production manager of the Thunguri Washed station is Gladys Wanjiru, she oversees all the processes of the coffee batches.
The Producers put a lot of effort into harvesting ripe cherries of the Ruiru 1, SL 28, SL 34 and Batian Variety. Once they deliver the production from their Farms to the Washed station, the Thunguri team works meticulously on the Process of fermentation and drying of the lots.
In the Washed station, in addition to the wet mill, they have machinery to carry out the threshing process and storage warehouses. Within their facilities they have a small laboratory where the team tastes the coffees to control the processes.
This is the first year that part of the coffees processed in the Washed station of Thunguri are threshed, the rest of the coffees are threshed in the dry mill of the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society.
Thunguri is a clear example of producers and cooperatives well aligned in quality, production and organization.
The lots that we develop in Thunguri are Traditional Washed process and are named after the Icarus star of our Constellations Range.
