The Thunguri Washing station is located in the coffee growing region of Nyeri, in the Mukurweini district. Built in 1999, it receives coffee cherries from more than 425 Producers in the area, who cultivate their coffee trees on volcanic soils above 1,700 meters above sea level. Thunguri is part of the Rumukia Cooperative, composed of eight Washed stations, of which Thunguri is one of the most relevant.
Kanye Mbote is responsible for the Thunguri station.
The Producers take special care in the manual harvesting of ripe cherries from the Ruiru 11, SL 28, SL 34 and Batian varietals. Once they deliver their production to the station, the Thunguri team meticulously works the fermentation and drying phases, ensuring consistency and quality in each batch.
In addition to the wet mill, the Thunguri station has its own threshing machinery, warehouses for coffee storage and a small cupping laboratory, where the team evaluates the lots and performs quality controls. This is the first year in which part of the processed coffees are threshed at the station itself; the rest is still being threshed in the dry mill of the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society.
Thunguri is a clear example of good coordination between Producers and cooperative in terms of quality, production and organization.
