Ethiopia is the fifth largest producer of Green coffee in the world, with 13 coffee growing regions, each with its own distinct cup profile. The aromas, profiles and their descriptors are a reflection of the diversity that the origin and its coffee has to offer.

Here are some interesting facts about the production of green coffee in Ethiopia:

  • 100% of the Coffee production in Ethiopia is of the Arabica Species.

  • Approximately 2.41% of Ethiopia’s cultivated land, equivalent to 1.82 million hectares, is under coffee trees.

  • The traditional and deeply rooted method for processing Coffee in Ethiopia is called “Washed”, which highlights the distinctive characteristics of each bean.

  • The five main importing countries of Ethiopian coffee are: Germany, Saudi Arabia, Japan, the United States and Belgium.

  • Coffee accounts for 60% of total Ethiopian exports. and contributes 25% of the country’s agricultural GDP.

  • 95% of Ethiopian coffee is grown in ‘forest coffee’ and ‘garden coffee’.

Coffee cultivation in Ethiopia

Coffee production in Ethiopia is classified into four distinct systems:

Forest Coffee:In this system, the local population harvests coffee that grows wild in Natural environments.

2. Semi-Wild Forest Coffee (Semi-forest Coffee): Here, coffee grows in forests that receive a certain degree of human management, although they still conserve their semi-wild character.

3. Garden Coffee (Garden Coffee): This system involves Cultivation in smallholder plots, where the number of coffee trees is more relevant than the extension in hectares. Most of the coffee production in the country follows this method.

4. Plantation Coffee: Ethiopian Coffee is grown on large estates in this more intensive and controlled system.

Each of these production systems brings its own uniqueness to the diversity of Coffee in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has a wide variety of ecosystems, the most distinctive feature of the country being the Rift Valley that runs through the entire country from southwest to northeast. The first coffee trees grew in this valley, fed by rich volcanic soils and surrounded by a temperate climate.
Most of the Coffee plantations in Ethiopia are located between 1,200 and +2,200 meters above sea level, taking advantage of the optimal conditions for cultivation.

Coffee Cultivation began in the s.. XV and since then the economy has been based on its export. The average age of coffee growers in Ethiopia is between 40 and 53 years, and there is a very high percentage of women working in coffee production, representing 75% of the equity rate.

The challenge for most Coffee Producers in Ethiopia is to obtain better benefits related to the production and marketing of a better quality product, for them there is no specialized institution offering extension support for coffee production in the country.
