The Kaiguthu Washing station is located in the Coffee region of Nyeri, in the Othaya district. It began operations in 1964 and is located between the Rwarai and Chinga rivers, in a transition zone between tea and Coffee producing areas. Today some 480 Producers deliver their Coffee cherries here, from farms totaling around 110 hectares, and the station is part of the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society.
The Washed station and the Cooperative are owned by the region’s Coffee Producers, who deliver their Harvest for processing while maintaining good traceability. The coffee growers receive support in inputs, agricultural training and accompaniment in the commercialization of their coffees. The fertile soils of Othaya, of volcanic origin, are combined with an altitude of over 1,700 meters above sea level, ideal conditions for the cultivation of high quality coffees of the Ruiru 11, SL 28 and SL 34 varieties.
Once the lots are processed at Kaiguthu, they are transferred to the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society’s dry mill for final threshing prior to export.
