Let’s talk about RWANDA

Recolectoras de café verde de Ruanda

We have been talking for a few weeks in our communications about Origin Rwanda, about the coffees that we are going to receive in a few weeks and about the Social Project for the Prevention of Breast Cancer that we are developing together with our partner Baho Coffee.n this post, we are going to explain more about the origin and production of Coffee in this country.

What should we know?

RWANDA ranks 28th as a world producer and only produces coffees of the Arabica Species and the Bourbon Red Variety.
The country is formed by 5 geographic provinces and in all of them coffee is produced. RWANDA has a total of 7 coffee growing regions, we have coffee from 2 regions: Kizi Rift and Muhazi.
Each of the coffee growing regions is divided into coffee growing districts, and in total there are 30 in the country.
Coffee is cultivated between 1,400 and 2,000 meters above sea level and generates more than 400,000 jobs.
There is only one harvest per year and the flowering of the coffee trees begins in the dry season, with the September rains. The Harvest of Coffee goes from the end of January to March in the west, until the highlands of the east which is in August.
The Flavour of the ‘potato’ is a characteristic defect in the coffees of RWANDA, the cup has a peculiar taste like raw potato. This happens when the cherry becomes contaminated by this ‘wound’, usually due to the borer beetle, another option may be that the cherry itself generates this as a defense against insect attack.

The evolution of the country

The country faces the future by progressively improving the national economy and creating a solid society that evolves to obtain the best results in its Coffee production.
This is possible thanks to the intervention of cooperatives that regulate production and help improve the quality of life of coffee growers, giving way to the visibility of women and their labor rights. Today coffee is the main source of livelihood for many families who work in its harvest.

Traceability of our Coffees

The traceability of the lots starts from the Washed stations where the Producers of each region who live nearby are registered, they deliver the production of their Farms.
We currently work with 5 Washed Stations where our R&D team together with the team of our partner Baho Coffee develop the Processes of our Constellations Range batches.
For the new Harvest, which will arrive in a few weeks, we have developed 15 lots of Coffee from 10 different Vanguard Processes that will be available in the first quarter of the year.
In addition to the coffees of the Coffee Constellations Range, we will have lots from the Terraswe will have lots from the Terras Range: Ikivuguto y Muka Kivu developed through traditional processes: Natural and Washed.
