The first alternative roasting championship in Spain!
We present the first edition of the ‘Roast Rumble‘ organized by Mare Terras Coffee and Giesen Coffee Roasters, on February 17, 18 and 19. A green coffee roasting championship in which a team of judges will select the best cup. We will gather at Stand C29 at the CoffeeFest in Madrid 10 participants who will roast their coffee batches in the Giesen W1R electric roaster.
What does the Roast Rumble consist of?
Qualification to the final
First stage - Tuesdays - Saturday, February 17
The first phase of the championship will be held on Saturday morning, February 17. All participants will receive 550 grams of our Guatemalan Coffee Meissa AVB from our Constellations Range. This Coffee is processed using a Process of Vanguard, specifically the Natural Sleeping Bag and is of the Variety Bourbon, Catuaí and Caturra. All participants will have their turn organized, they will have 30 minutes to roast their 500 grams sample in the Giesen W1R Electric roaster. Once they finish their 30 minutes, they will deliver the roasted coffee sample to the Roast Rumble organization.
Second phase - Tasting - Sunday, February 18
The tasting of the coffees that qualify for the finals will be held on Sunday, February 18 at 10.30 am. The team of judges will taste the 10 samples of the coffees using the SCA protocol and will choose the 5 best coffees on the table. The 5 roasters who qualify with the best score will move on to the finals.
Final
First Phase - Tuesday, February 18th
This phase of the championship follows the same protocol as the first part. The final Roast Rumble will be held on Sunday, February 18. In the morning 550 grams will be delivered Coffee from El Salvador Vega EKI to the 5 finalists, this time the Coffee will be a little bit more complex to roast, it will be a coffee from our Constellations Range, processed through a Modern Recipes processes specifically the Natural Anaerobic Process of the Bourbon Variety. Once again, all participants will have their turn to roast 500 grams of their green coffee sample in the Giesen W1R roaster. When they finish roasting their coffee, they deliver it to the Roast Rumble organization.
Second Phase - Tasting - Monday, February 19
The final tasting will be held on Monday, February 19. The judges will taste the 5 coffee samples of the finalists through the SCA protocol and the 3 coffees with the highest scores will be the winners.

Peter is Q Arabica and Q Robusta Grader, has been with Mare Terra since 2020 and is responsible for advising clients and managing major accounts. He is passionate about Coffee and loves to collaborate in the process of developing experimental batches.
